Your Questions, Answered

Patients often ask what acupuncture feels like, how it works, and what to expect before beginning treatment. Here are answers to common questions about care. If you don’t see your question here, feel free to reach out.

  • Most patients are surprised by how gentle acupuncture feels. The needles are as thin as a human hair, and many people barely notice them. Some feel a brief tingling or heaviness that quickly fades. In fact, many patients become so relaxed that they take a nap during treatment.

  • Your first visit begins with a detailed intake where we discuss your health history, lifestyle, and primary concerns. I’ll also assess your pulse and tongue, traditional diagnostic methods that help guide treatment. Afterward, you’ll rest comfortably while fine, sterile needles are placed at specific points. Initial appointments typically last 75–90 minutes.

  • Initial visits are usually 75–90 minutes to allow time for consultation and treatment. Follow-up appointments are generally 50–60 minutes, giving your body sufficient time to respond and settle.

  • The number of sessions depends on your condition, how long it has been present, and your overall health. Acute concerns may improve within a few visits. Chronic or long-standing patterns often benefit from consistent treatment over several weeks. We will create a plan together and reassess regularly.

  • Acupuncture is very safe when performed by a licensed practitioner. Side effects are rare and typically mild. Occasionally, you may notice slight bruising, temporary soreness, or feel more relaxed or tired afterward. These effects are short-lived and generally resolve quickly.

  • Acupuncture can support a wide range of concerns, including musculoskeletal pain, stress and anxiety, sleep disruption, digestive issues, headaches, hormonal shifts, and fatigue. Treatment works by improving circulation, modulating inflammation, and supporting the body’s regulatory systems.

  • With over a decade of clinical experience, I’ve worked with patients experiencing chronic pain, neuropathy, headaches, stress-related conditions, fatigue, and more. Each treatment is personalized. If you’d like to discuss your specific concern, you’re welcome to schedule a brief consultation or reach out directly.

  • Choosing an acupuncturist is both practical and personal. Look for someone who is licensed, experienced, and familiar with concerns similar to yours. Just as importantly, notice whether you feel heard and supported. Healing works best when there is trust between patient and practitioner.

  • Yes. Acupuncture integrates well with other therapies, including physical therapy, counseling, and medication. If you have complex medical conditions or are taking prescription medications, we’ll take that into account and coordinate appropriately.

  • I do not bill insurance directly. However, I can provide a superbill for your acupuncture treatments at True Nature Wellness in Sebastopol. Many patients submit this for partial reimbursement, depending on their out-of-network benefits. I recommend contacting your insurance provider to confirm coverage.

  • Current rates for new and return visits are listed on the [BOOK] page. Return visits are $120, and package options are available. A superbill can be provided if your plan includes out-of-network acupuncture benefits.
